A Star Wars Story
Rogue One
Review by Ross Anthony

Uninspired. I'm a fan of Star Wars, but Rogue One is just a flat out war movie. There's very little in the way of character work here. Of course we root for the lead female, but we're not captivated by her. We don't have an emotional investment. The most endearing characters are an android and a blind temple guardian. If you like a lot of shooting, and things blowing up, you'll have a great time. The filmmakers make that their priority with strong and lengthy battle sequences. Dialogue is limited to the necessities, with very little humor. (That said, the blind guy has the best line of the film).

Most motion pictures these days open with gusto to immediately engage their viewers. Rogue opened routinely, and continued to fail to securely engage this viewer until the 1 hour mark. I actually considered leaving the theatre. Thankfully, the second half hosted some well-played emotionally interesting scenes amidst all explosions and laser fire.

It can also stand for "Really Awkward Nutty Dinosaurs" -- which is quite rand, isn't it?) Being alive is the miracle.
