88 Electric Keys
Casio Privia
Review by Ross Anthony

Ever since I saw the first synthesizer in the seventies, I've been looking for that sweet acoustic piano sound. It's been so very elusive. In the eighties they started to come close, but the prices were insane. Then there were the real electric pianos – instruments with actual piano action that struck a piece of metal to initiate the signal. Those were sweet. I wanted one. But they too, were expensive and very heavy. I gave up. But a couple of years ago I stumbled into a Guitar Center just to take a peek at what brilliant engineers and modern technology had been up to while I'd been banging on real pianos. I saw the Casio Privia and bought it. The thing was four hundred bucks. It was relatively light. I mean, I could move it on my own – carry it to the car, etc. After playing it for a week, I brought it back and bought the next step up – the 500 buck model. Why? Because it was completely the same, but it had this killer rock organ sound that I just had to have. I didn't mind the general midi built-in mod either.

I've never regretted this decision. What a great keyboard. I use it as a songwriter and composer. I've never really figured out its song-recording properties. Some functions about it still confuse me, but it does what I need it to do and the piano sound is very good. It's not perfect. But for the cash – it is very very good. And the 88 weighted keys feel good as well. The only possible drawback – I wouldn't mind an expression wheel.

And for those of you looking for something for the kids to practice on – get this instead of a piano. Why? It's cheaper, it's smaller, and it has a volume control and headphone jack. You will really appreciate that headphone jack while junior is playing that practice tune for the 27th time.

A big two thumbs up. For a sound sample go to RossAnthonyShow.com. To purchase a copy of one of my CD's go to: RossAnthony.com and click on Good Books & Good Music. Enjoy the day!
