The Right Sequence
Powertracks Pro Audio V12
Review by Ross Anthony

Over ten years ago I bought the midi only version of Powertracks Pro out of an ad in the back of some music mag. It was $29 or some radically low price. I had a blast with that. It was my first experience with midi, and I liked it. Years went buy, I started putting more time into my book writing and the music took a backseat, but this summer, I wanted to record again. Remembering my good experience with PG music's Powertracks; I picked up the newer version that now records digital tracks as well as midi. This is powerful stuff for under a hundred dollars. I was and am very happy.

In addition to recording both midi and analogue (you'll need a hardware interface for that), this software gives you the option of using "real drums." These are drums recorded by real studio musicians, yet adaptable to your songs, fills etc. They sound great.

Another great feature is the harmonizer. I love this one. I sing a track then run it through the harmonizer and shazamm, I've got a lower harmony part or higher, or 2 down 1 up ... or or or. That's great enough, but the thing also allows you to choose the style of singing voice for the harmonies. It's just plain fun and plain powerful really. Of course, there's a learning curve, but I found it a bit more streamline, both in learning and in loading, than other more popular sequencers. It has a barebones CD burner too, be nice if it had a few more features on that.

I just love the audio editor, I can go in on sort of a micro-level and clean up all my mistakes... especially tempo errors are easy. Suppose you struck your chord a little early or a little late -- don't re-record the whole track. Go in and move that sound event over -- nudge it to the correct location. What a time savor. This is powerful software. I can't say enough about it. I'm actually excited about it and look forward to doing more recording with it. Take a listen to the songs below. Both were recorded with Powertracks pro. I wrote 'em, I'm singing and playing all the instruments, save for the drums which were those from Powertracks' "Real Drums," though I arranged them. (Song Samples Coming Soon…)
