ThinkOutside Stowaway
Portable Bluetooth Keyboard
Review by Ross Anthony

MY OLD SET UP: I just love my Palm m100 and matching foldout keyboard (for that review click here). As a writer, my "key" most interest in the tool is the ability to simply type on the go. It's a great system, but it has it's limitations. First, the M100 will lose information if it loses power. And while it's great that the keyboard doesn't require batteries, it does require the palm unit to sit directly up connected to it. And lastly it's not rigid (I.E. you can't type with it on your lap without it folding up.) Anyway, I like the set up, it's just that technology has advanced and I love it when that happens. Also, I got a new phone -- Cingular's 2125, so I wanted a Bluetooth fold up keyboard for use with it.

THE STOWAWAY: This keyboard is strikingly elegant. Whereas the Palm keyboard is beautiful in function (and made by the same company, I'm told), the Stowaway is both beautiful in function and appearance. Also, the Stowaway folds only once. It's lost the number keys row at the top to keep it small. It's key layout is also a shave tighter than your computer's keyboard. The smaller, slightly more compactness of the keyboard hasn't really bothered me much -- in fact, it might even feel a little better as my hands are smaller than average too. Not sure how you with bigger hands will find it. However, the absence of the number row has forced the top row of buttons to play triple duty: letters, numbers, symbols. And because the shift key is used to make caps of the letters, two function keys have been added on either side of the space bar. All of this isn't too much of a problem to adjust to -- save for the exclamation mark. It's easy to think of numbers as different from words and so I can remember to hit a different function key for them, but in the midst of a passionate expression of literary verbosity I don't want to stop to look for a function key for a simple punctuation symbol. The parens are a tad dicey for the same reason, but used less often.

That said, I love this keyboard. It has the same wonderful click-touch feel of the Palm's foldout -- at least as good, probably better than whatever you're typing on now. It's small, light, and one step sharper than James Bond. You'll feel very cool using it.

I also love that it's Bluetooth. It has a nifty cradle for my phone (which matches it's two-tone color like it was made for it). But, if I want, I can put the phone in my pocket while I type, or put the phone on the dash of the car with the keyboard in my lap. It's very nice not to have to put the phone in the cradle while I type. Quick short cuts to common applications are also provided on some of the letter keys. A quick click of them in conjunction with a function key will open up the appropriate application.

The keyboard does require two AAA batteries and a driver. The driver that came with the unit simply didn't work. My phone rejected it, then said it accepted it, but in the end it didn't work. So, I downloaded the newest one from the THINKOUTSIDE website and it worked just fine. Both phone and keyboard enjoy each other's company.
