Rich, Elegant, Edifying. One of the most beautifully filmed documentaries that I've ever seen.
Whether or not shooting documentaries in an artist fashion compromises the objectivity of a work is certainly a discussion worth having. But first watch this work.
Anyway, these filmmakers seem rather biased regarding their message. They drizzle sweetly composed A/V all over quirky earthy beekeepers rather certain that pestisides are responsible for “Colony Colapse Disorder,” while giving zero time to users of the pestisides. Other possible causes are also mentioned.
I didn't find that objectional, because I share the same bias.
Okay, so it's not a pure unstilted doc, but it is a beautiful portrait painting in RGB of some unsung hardworking souls – the beekeeper and the bee. Both have a great deal to teach us city folk.
The first half resonates with an agricultural doomsday message. Thankfully, unlike many other docs, this film deliberately clears the field for a second half full of hope, ideas, and alternative solutions.
Btw, I also quite enjoyed The Real Dirt on Farmer John by the same director.
