It delivers what it promises, lots of action seasoned with lots of snarky dialogue. Actually, save for the boring opening alien discourse ("Use our army, you will be king of the pesky humans, yada yada yada"), the rest of the film's fun banter is so good, the action becomes secondary. Plenty of times, the film had us all laughing out loud. Robert Downing Jr.'s lines are so standout precious, it feels as though he wrote them himself. What a great character. In fact, the film is rich with interesting characters. Sadly, the villian mojo doesn't quite stand up to these quirky heroes and their interaction. But, this is not at all a major flaw of the film.
Tony Stark is solidly sophisticated 2012, while Captain America provides a nostalgic sepia-tinted window into the simpler views of yesteryear. The matching of the two is a microcosm of the fine balance between a modern tone and that good old fashion Marvel comic book feel the filmmakers so strongly succeed at here. Not a film that will stick in your memory, but certainly a good time while in the theatre.
