This is a quality production. If you like a good suspense drama, you'll like it. Suspense is not my favorite genre, but I certainly enjoyed it. Hanks is solid, the US Navy and Seals are also portrayed smartly and succinctly. And of course, the casting of the Somalis as the Somali pirates is right on. No doubt you've heard the story of Barkhad Abdi, who answered the cast call in Minnesota and found himself an Oscar Nominee months later. I'm sure many a Hollywood actor feels pirated for that slick move.
So there's nothing bad to say, this was a fascinating "based on" a true story that the real Capt. Philips more or less endorsed. But the actual truth of the matter seems to be somewhat debatable (at least by a few members of the crew). Search youtube for "bonus features" related to the story.
Overall, I'll give the film a strong B+, only because of my bias which is that I like to have some deeper reflection as a reward for enduring suspense. The film succeeds at Hollywood drama, while still floating with the air of a documentary. It's crafted very well. It's a survival based film, I just wanted a bit more from it. That said, that last scene with the military doc rocks! I was balling like a baby.
