Uproarious. I'm a big fan of laughing and this film reached out and tickled me over and over again. Not just a giggle here and a chuckle there, I'm talking knee slapping, grab your belly, laugh out loud stuff. That alone is cause for recommendation, but the film, while keeping your funny bone occupied, slyly reaches quietly for your heart bone.
Yes, it's (how shall we say?) certainly coarse -- okay, vulgar, and crude, definitely and often. Neither, though, does the title promise you tact. In the end, the film's bold, unashamed, jagged honesty feels very respectful and perhaps fresh.
Written well in story (roughly along the lines of Shallow Hal), and extremely well developed in the dialogue department, the film's first two acts roll with great lines and gags from every conceivable location. You get the feeling that the filmmakers didn't just use scenes to progress the story, but they savored each scene as a chance to create more humor. These people had a great deal of fun making this picture over the course of many weeks -- and we get to enjoy all that concentrated into just about two hours.
And on top of all that fun, there's a few good lessons to be learned here, and I'm not too proud to say I even got choked up a bit at the end.
