I love the idea behind this one. Essentially a gloomy ornery British writer and happy American must find some way to work together in order to create the iconic movie musical "Mary Poppins." "Saving Mr. Banks," however, is a film with some precious moments, but is mostly not precious. In fact, the film drags until Tom Hanks/Walt Disney graces the screen. This may be the writing, but my feeling is simply that the role of P.L. Travers had been miscast. I love Emma Thompson, but she doesn't carry this role. Just as Hanks makes a wonderful Disney here, but simply didn't carry "Road to Perdition." That said, the film is shot beautifully, edited nicely (integrating a second storyline), but doesn't quite pull itself together.
