The Untold Story |
SEED |
|
Review by Ross Anthony |
Though not perfect, this is yet another beautiful documentary from the folks that brought us Queen of the Sun and The Real Dirt on Farmer John. Both "A" productions in my book. Every shot is a beautiful piece of art: careful, deeply colored, and poetic. The subjects are rich interesting characters with history in their faces and sincerity in their eyes -- and they just love seeds. They love seeds like we all should love seeds. But urban-born folks -- like myself -- may too easily eat and run. So, if you're a city-sort, and have never grown a thing from seed, we'll forgive you if you see this film. I have forgiven myself, because I grew a few veggies from seed and enjoyed them in my mouth.
Sadly though, SEED is not all about the miracle of nature. The concerns over modern food engineering, namely GMOs and pesticides and the loss of 100s of species of plants due to modern agriculture, have seed lovers filling arks with beans, grains, and seeds.
How could the doc be better? I'd wager there are engineers who believe GMOs are safe -- give them some screen time. Lastly, spend more time explaining what we can do to curb these dangers.

Rand() functions, Pho chicken soup, rollerblading, and frozen yogurt (w/ blueberries) also rock! (Btw, rand is short for random. It can also stand for "Really Awkward Nutty Dinosaurs" -- which is quite rand, isn't it?) Being alive is the miracle.
