Emily Blunt! Her performance is layered, mighty, connecting, and full of life! Wow! Emily Blunt is the story here.
Sadly though, the production doesn't have any emotional weight until she appears on screen. Despite her introduction as a silly fun weather person - the film still kicks up 2 gears.
This is Spielberg reaching back to his Close Encounters days. Perhaps he felt nostalgic. Interestingly enough, the film feels like it was made back in the 70's - a little rickety, a bit uneven, it doesn't have the over-the-top production feel of modern day. Still, at every turn - compelling.
I quite enjoyed the final build to the climax, but the cherry on top falls a bit flat, even hokey. While the film lacks the nuance we'd expect of a seasoned filmmaker, and even feels like one of M. Night Shyamalan's non-Sixth Sense Films ... I mostly enjoyed it. If Spielberg had securely "landed" that beautiful, hard-earned build-to-end - I would have left the theatre with an "out of this world" feeling. As is, I think we're talking about a B+ movie here.
