Ben Dabiri Trio
The Sanctuary Studio
Review by Ross Anthony

I just love the sound of the baby grand in the Sanctuary Studio. The tones bounce bright and distinct from the propped top. Ben absolutely banged the hell out of that piano.

Not all of the arrangements (or perhaps it was song choices) resonated with me, but the ones that did - WOW! That trio connected right to the heart and rocked the place!

Fantastic piano playing, and the drums knocked it out as well (Angelo Velasquez). Curious interesting rhythms that were clean and meticulous. One could enjoy the drums simply on their own.

And as if that wasn't enough, our gentleman host, Simon Drew, joined in on "Nature boy." His vocals were sweet, and his trumpet solo -- absolutely sublime. Plus, the horn came with an accompanying homey story as well.

The Sanctuary Studio is an absolutely beautiful place to enjoy the expression of musicians. Twenty seats or so, warmly lit, decorated with brass instruments and a love for music. You're essentially in for a house concert - hosted by Simon Drew.

The sanctuary studio offers classes, performances, and even philosophical keynotes. Check it out in downtown Santa Ana.
